                                                Geece Rocked by Earthquake

A strong earthquake occurred on Sunday January 8, 2006, in the sea along the Hellenic arc, between the islands of Kythira and Crete in Southern Greece. The earthquake was strongly felt throughout Greece, from Crete in the South to Kastoria in the north.

Damages

In Kythira, eighty homes and an airport were damaged. The phone service there was also interrupted. Minor damage occurred at Chania, Crete. Three people were slightly injured there and the phone service was also interrupted. However, the village of Mitata suffered the greatest damage on the island. The phone service in Lakonia was also interrupted.

Earthquake Origin Time, Magnitude

The quake struck at 1:34 p.m. in Greece. The magnitude of the quake was about 6.9 on the Richter scale.

Type of Crustal Displacements

Most of the earthquakes in this particular region of the Greek Arc involve reverse as well as strike slip motion and some normal faulting motion. This earthquake involved inverse but mostly lateral movement. The African plate is estimated to have moved in a northern direction by about 90 centimeters in relation to the Aegean Sea plate and to have subducted beneath it.

The Government’s Response

The authorities in Hania and Kythira closed all the schools 9 January so that the buildings could be checked for signs of damage. Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos said that the earthquake happened at a great depth and that there had only been limited damage in the area of Kythira.

Building earthquake-proof buildings in certain quake prone areas can minimize the damage after quakes. It is also important that there are emergency evacuation drills in quake-prone areas to prepare the people living there in case of emergency. It is of utmost importance that the people are prepared at all times lest another earthquake happens unexpectedly.
